Will Coheed and Cambria’s prequel rock our socks?

Prequels are everywhere these days. For example, the Star Wars prequels, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Hobbit movie, Halo Reach… it just seems that every good story is being told from before the beginning more often. One prequel that I am excited for in 2010 is “Year of the Black Rainbow” by Coheed and Cambria. As many as may or may not know, Coheed and Cambria’s albums are each part of a science fiction story; a type of concept album which has caught the attention of sci-fi fans and rock listeners alike. “The Year of the Black Rainbow” is their prequel to this epic story.

The newest single released on February 2, 2010 titled “The Broken”. Give it a listen below!

Do you think this prequel will befall the fate of so many sci-fi prequels before it? Does the fact that this story is represented through music change the stereotype that prequels don’t usually rock (pun intended)?

I have faith in Coheed and Cambria. If we could judge solely based on the song “The Broken” I can easily say that we will not be disappointed. But you would have to separate the music and the storyline within the music. We can’t really judge the story until we really know details and actually know how the story ends. Music wise I think they’ll do the rest of their material justice. I’ll wait to judge the story.

To be honest, I haven’t really liked a whole album of theirs after the first two. Those were some good albums right there. But I don’t really hate on them either. I like what they’re trying to do and I like that they give nods to old prog bands with their whole sci fi and story driven approach to their albums. But after the story is over, what then? Do they change their name? Do they disband? Do they keep the name and just write about other shit? It’s an interesting thought.

I wonder the same thing. They had a good idea – is this them milking it?

I had followed along best I could with the story as it spanned the four albums and even with the “twist” of Good Apollo 1 it was an interesting concept. What I found that I like about Coheed is the fact that their musical style changes from album to album. GA1 was more prog and NWFT took a lot from 80’s Heavy Metal/Iron Maiden influences for example. A lot of fans still miss the raw sound/themes from the first two albums but from “The Broken” I definately feel they have been able to mesh all these albums styles together and create a new sound once again.

The reason most bad prequels are well… bad is because they don’t advance the story and just become a cash-in. With the story of Coheed and Cambria I definitely feel the prequel has a purpose and it will add to the overall story. As long as the prequel has a purpose and executes it well then it will succeed.

In “The Broken”, the sound is an amalgamation of all previous Coheed and Cambria songs up till now. If the whole album can accomplish bringing the best of Coheed together while adding something new I feel it will be an amazing album for sure.
