The John Mayer Empire Grows!

I truly believe that John Mayer is smart! Whether you like his music or not, you have to give the guy credit. First off, he plays a mean guitar and every album he makes offers something more to the listener. He’s creative and dates some of the hottest and …dare I say .. skankiest (..ahem…Jessica Simpson) women in Hollywood. Secondly, he knows how to market himself. He’s not overlly pretentious and does things outside the realm of music in order to not only please his audience but to reach out beyond it; some examples include:  The MayerCraft Carrier, his bromance with Kanye and Dave Chappelle, and his ability to make people laugh (“Two Guys, 1 Cup”, “Chocolate Rain Remix”)

What most people don’t know is that John Mayer had a small TV show aptly named “John Mayer Has a TV Show” on VH1 a while back. While it wasn’t marketed much  and was on at a time usually reserved for the homeshopping network, the show was actually really funny, smart and witty.  Some clips can be found on youtube. Some memorable ones include the time he dressed up in a bear suit and went around the parking lot of his concert telling people that John Mayer sucked; or the time he told a focus group that he doesn’t write his own material and that it’s all part of “THE MACHINE”. Not the best quality footage, but overall entertaining.

So where will John Mayer go next!? Apparently, John Mayer is in talks with CBS to create and star in a music variety show.  A part of me is very excited for the possibility of a John Mayer produced show, and a part of me knows I will be disappointed with a primetime butchery of what John wants to offer the public. I am sure CBS will censor anything funny John wants to produce. Regardless, you gotta hand it to the guy.. he’s come a long way from that Body Is a Wonderland song…
