Step Brothers is a step in .. a direction…
I have always loved Will Ferrell for his arrogant rants and his obscene antics, and I have been a loyal follower of his films. After last year’s Semi-Pro I was a little disappointed… to me, that movie tanked. So going into Step Brothers I was a little nervous. Had Will lost his knack for gut busting comedy, was his shtick getting old? …. The answer is… kinda!…
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly really know how to play off each other’s energies and their chemistry is what made the movie work for me. If this film was strictly Will or strictly John C. I definitely wouldn’t have liked or appreciated it as much. This is Adam McKay, Ferrell and Reilly’s second venture on celluloid; the first one being the highly enjoyable Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. That type of pedigree warrants a very successfully funny film.
The movie tells the tale of two 40-something year olds who just haven’t grown up and out of their parents lives. They are reckless losers who want nothing out of life but to sit in their 1980s graphic tee’s, play on their drums and … sleepwalk…..
The first 30 minutes of the film are excellent, with Ferrell and Reilly beating the crap out of each other, verbally assaulting each other and dropping lines like “When you fall asleep I am going to beat your face in with a pillow case full of bars of soap.” Priceless… It all culminates into an obscene battle between the two “brothers” when an intricately placed piece of Ferrell disrupts the sanctity of Reilly’s drum set. [Don't touch my drumset!!!!]
Ferrell and Reilly are shoe-ins for adult actors acting like children… to their temper tantrums, to their inability to understanding sexual advances… by the way.. one of the grossest, yet funniest quotes of the film gets delivered by one of the lead female characters as she attempts to seduce John C. Reilly’s Dale character. I don’t want to give away too much of the film, but I will say that the ending is definitely the highlight of the film. Way to end on top…..as you leave the film just keep telling yourself that it was just a movie and did its job getting $11 worth of giggles out of you! Plus.. there’s nothing better than “Boats and Hoes”!!
